Blek - First Impressions

Blek is game about imagination and personality. Anything you draw keeps moving – and watching your creations come to life is like magic.

I have been playing Blek since past few days. Most of the times its the game design that contributes a lot to the first impression, even before you get into the gameplay. And the first impression on blek – visually striking being minimal.

Easy game controls, creative levels and countless solutions to each level – blek has got that perfect recipe to an addictive game. Initial levels are designed to make you get accustomed to the game. And then you will have to get creative to finish the later levels. You need to put more thought into the intricate gestures you make to finish.

Blek defines how creative a minimalistic game can get!

Blek is a unique game about imagination and personality. Everything you draw keeps moving – and watching your creations move is like watching magic.

The goal is simple: shape a line that collects all colored circles avoiding black holes on its route. There are no specific moves that you need to master. To every level countless solutions exist, from delightfully simple to exceptionally deep and complex, yet always elegant.

How to play Blek:

Blek has a simple yet interesting gameplay . Draw a line – any line – and watch it spring across the screen, mirroring your gestures, again and again,  collecting the coloured balls and avoiding the black holes.

You should create a shape in such a way that it can collect all the coloured balls before it gets consumed by the black holes. Blek is like a modern day implementation of the good old snake game.

There is no correct solution for a level. Countless solutions exist, from delightfully simple to exceptionally complex. Blek is completely personal to you in this sense.

These holes disappear once you collect all the colored balls and next level appears. There is no limit on the number of trials you get. Play as long as you please to finish the level.

Sometimes, there are new elements in the game like  balls containing multiple dots. Collecting such balls lets those internal dots loose which goes on to collect other coloured balls. These new elements are present in very few levels and most levels are just holes and the plain balls.

Blek tips and tricks:

In most levels, imagine dividing the board into multiple equal parts – the first part with nothing but holes, other parts with holes and the colored dots. In these levels this empty part will have exact same pattern of holes as the other parts with balls.

Doodle the shape in empty part, imagining that the colored balls are in this one. Release it and see the floating line collecting all the colored balls.

What I like about Blek:

Minimalistic approach.

How complex the levels can get as you progress the game is pretty amazing.

Game sounds are pleasing to the ears.

Ability to go back to earlier levels and try out new techniques, which I dont think anyone would be interested in doing. But its good to have this. Instead of getting stuck on a level, try few earlier levels and get back to this one with a fresh trial.

You can share levels and solutions with friends and see how they arrived at the solution.

Improved for 3d touch- draw thicker lines with 3d touch or with apple pencil on your iPad pro.

What I do not like about Blek:

In multiple levels the screen area is not enough to accomodate few solutions.

There is no way to know how many further levels are there and know your progress. You can only the see the current level number.

No way to compete with other people.

What other reviewers has to say:

“One of the greatest joys of Blek is experimenting with your approach.”

Blek - Conclusion:

Blek is attractive with its free-flowing and smooth nature.

Precision is the core of this game, but that does not limit the game’s free form nature and your experimentation and improvisation during the time you will spend with Blek.

Overall, Blek is an impressive, creative game that tops my list of minimalistic games!!
