Pinout - First Impressions

First thing you notice will definitely be the Tron themed neon colored pin boards. Though basic idea of the game remained the same – to hit metal balls with the pins placed on both sides, Pinout is very different from the good old pinball games.

The major difference is that you play against “time” here.

  • GamePlay 75%
  • Graphics 85%
  • Performance 85%
  • In App Purchases 60%
  • Overall 75%

And also the board here is not actually a single board with two pins, you will traverse through a set of boards stitched together via a neon-bridge. The goal is to cover maximum distance before the time runs out.

The visuals are the best part of this game. The neon colored board and the trailing tail of the ball looks amazing against the mostly black background. The graphics are pretty cool, and you also have option to choose between the graphic levels among functional, balanced and extreme graphics designed for high end phones.

I initially felt that this game is a no brainer. But its definitely not. This game is all about testing your timing and reflexes.

PinOut!

Pinball reinvented by the award-winning developers of Smash Hit and Does not Commute! Race against time in a continuous journey through this mysterious canyon of pulsating lights and throbbing retro wave beats. The classic pinball mechanic remodeled into a breathtaking arcade experience.

"PinOut is a super smart, beautifully designed pinball game" – Wired

"Stop everything and play PinOut" – EuroGamer

"It's not pinball in the traditional sense – it's something so much better" – PocketGamer

"This is a hugely compelling mobile ball-smacker that deserves to be played by many, many people" – Stuff magazine

PinOut is playable at no cost and free from ads. An optional premium upgrade is available through a one-time in-app purchase that will enable the ability to continue from checkpoints.

How to play Pinout:

Tap left or right side of the screen to flip the pins on the respective side.
The board is not completely a two dimesional structure. The connections between different stages of the board are the ramps that are above this board. So aiming is important to push the ball onto the ramps and reach further stages before you run out of time.

To help you with time, there are white glowing dots
which gives you an extra second per dot that you collect.
At times there will be multiple paths available to go to next part of the stage and you have to make a choice. Your choice will depend on the pin onto which the ball is coming. Sometimes you will have to push the ball from one pin to the other if any of these paths offer the extra time offering dots.

Timing of the pin flip makes all the difference. It is possible to hold the ball on the flip and aim for a precise shot, but there isnt enough time to do this every time . Timings become easier as you play more and more.

After each stage there is a checkpoint and the board changes the colors. But unfortunately you cannot start from the last checkpoint unless the pro version is purchased. So, one silly mistake brings you to the beginning of the game. Looking at the images below makes it simpler for you to get this

The levels get trickier as you progress through the boards. The number of pins increases which will allow you to aim for the intricate paths to reach the next part of the board.
There are some special holes on the board, falling onto which gives the ball special powers, like freezing the time until next 10 flips, slowing down the time for a while to help with the precise aims and there is also a random power option, which mostly results in the freezing time option.

There are also few sweet spots, hitting onto which freezes this game and starts a mini game in the top portion of the screen. There are quite a few games to unlock here, like car dash and flappy bird. The number of seconds you play that mini game is your bonus time. This is where you have the chance to earn maximum bonus to reach farther stages of the board.

You will get to understand the physics of the game better as you play more. There are in all 10 stages after which there is an endless marathon. Reaching this takes a lot of gameplay though.

Pinout tips and tricks:

Aiming is easier if you focus on when to flip the pin.

  1. The closer the ball is to the end of the flip the farther it reaches across the breadth of the board.

  2. Flip when the ball reaches the edge of the pin to transfer the ball to the other side of the board. This helps to aim for paths which were earlier on the same side as the ball.

3. Flip late to hit the ball harder. This is needed sometimes to climb up the slopy ramps. Other wise ball just drops back from the slope which results in a great time waste.

What I like about Pinout:

Mesmerizing graphics.
Board design that never gets boring.

There are multiple paths to choose between and each path results in a different game play.

Mini games that helps to earn some extra time.

What I donot like about Pinout:

There is no option to continue from the previous check point unless the pro version is purchased. Anyways playing from the beginning is not that boring.

Sometimes when the ball starts to drop, it passes through the gaps between the pins for several stages. Crossing all that again without any bonus coins in between makes it difficult to progress further.

What other reviewers has to say:

Conclusion:

Coming from the developers of Smash Hit and Sprinkle, this game tries to live upto the mark.

Though taking different paths result in different game everytime, the free version may not keep you entertained for longer.

Anyways there is no limitation on the levels you can play in the free version. Higher levels can be achieved easily once you get hold of the game.
